
Sharena Rice, PhD, is a systems neuroscientist with an unusual combination of hands-on experience in medical device quality engineering, venture-stage technical diligence, and field-level scientific authorship. She has produced more than 35 field resources for neurotechnology and serves as a Contributing Editor at Neurotech Reports, the field's longest-running trade publication. She is co-inventor on two computer vision provisional patents, one in AI-assisted anatomical segmentation for therapeutic ultrasound targeting and another in behavior prediction for road safety.
Dr. Rice's path to clinical trials leadership draws upon multiple vantage points on the field. She earned her PhD in Neuroscience at the University of Michigan, focused on brain rhythms and neural circuits. There, she was on the team that discovered and characterized a new brain wave called “splines” in rodents. She studied biochemistry at California Lutheran University and completed a post-baccalaureate research education program at the University of Michigan prior to her doctoral training. As the first employee at a transcranial focused ultrasound neuromodulation device startup, Dr. Rice wore many hats to bring the technology from concept to four prototypes to multi-site clinical trials. As a Venture Fellow at a neuro and AI infrastructure-focused fund, she produced a 229-page technical due diligence framework and evaluated more than one hundred startup submissions.
